Been settling back into my new semester schedule. I should have a new icon post up by the end of the week, but first, a picspam!

So what do I mean by "payoff?" Well, every movie has its share of thrilling climaxes and heartwarming moments. Sometimes the heartwarming moments are better than the climax. Sometimes the heartwarming moment is the climax. Sometimes your heart skips a beat in glee. Sometimes you reach the credits and wonder why you just wasted two hours of your life.

And just so it's known, I've become a pretty cynical movie viewer, well-versed in the world common tropes and cliches. A world of moment killers and missed opportunities. I've learned that the movie makers don't have to give the movie viewers anything. And a lot of the time, the end isn't worth the expectation leading up to it.

Whatever the case, these are the moments that make the journey worth it. "Payoffs" if you will. They're the scenes that had me staring in total fascination the first time I watched them, and they always make my day a little brighter whenever I watch them again.

I'm not writing summaries under the picspams, but if you haven't seen some of these and really like the others... yeah, I am recommending the ones that you haven't seen yet.

"You have taken the land which is rightfully ours. Years from now, my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations; your people will wear cardigans and drink highballs. We will sell our bracelets by the roadside; you will play golf and enjoy hot hors d'oeuvres. My people will have pain and degradation; your people will have stick-shifts. The gods of my tribe have spoken. They have said, 'Do not trust the Pilgrims, especially Sarah Miller.' And for all these reasons, I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground."

"To me Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of colour is magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind that strange wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist but also one of the greatest men who ever lived."

"Never knew... I could... feel... like this. It's like I've never seen the sky before. Want to vanish inside your kiss. Every day I'm loving you. More and more. Listen to my heart. Can you hear it sing? Come back to me and forgive everything. Seasons may change. Winter to Spring.
"I love you.

"Sunnewalon, suno aisa bhi hota hai
There is a tale I have to tell

"Dil deta hai jo woh jaan bhi khota hai
About a man who lost his heart, and gave up his life as well

"Pyar aisa jo karta hai, kya marke bhi marta hai
The one who loves this way, can he die? Even if death takes him away?

"Aao tum bhi aaj sunlo
Come, hear this fable today."

I truly agree with you on Finding Nemo, Batman Returns, Elf, and Love Actually (that movie is full of amazing payoffs), but definitely the biggest payoff out of these for me is Vincent in "Doctor Who" - I wept all the way through that scene, and when I went to the National Gallery of Art after seeing the episode, I looked at the Van Gogh paintings with new eyes. Utterly amazing.

And on that note, Om Shanti Om looks really good! I'm going to have to look that up. :)

Excellent picspam!!

The last time I'd been to the National Gallery of Art, I was eight years old and definitely didn't appreciate what was going on. I remember seeing some Andy Warhol stuff and learning about this guy Homer... something, but there's a lot more impact when you know some history behind the artwork and have had more schoolin' than... the elementary kind. And then with the emotional impact of using Vincent Van Gogh in a Doctor Who episode and then giving us that moment... I'll never look at his paintings the same way again.

I'm a huge sap when it comes to movies/anything remotely emotionally impactful. I've been known to cry through the beginning scenes of Love Actually because I'm like, "It's so emotional, saying goodbye and reuniting with people at the airport!!" Hell, I cried during "Sozin's Comet" (though, seriously. Who didn't get choked up when Zuko finally reconciled with Iroh? Just me? Okay). ;)

Moulin Rouge definitely delivered quite a finale. Such a great mix of beautiful production, music and emotion. That storyline in Love Actually is one my favorites and had the most satisfying ending. I also loved Catwoman's end in Batman Returns.

I don't know how I feel about the Star Trek one. To me, the last 20 minutes of the film felt like the weakest. Kind of seemed like once the film hit 2 hours, they needed to wrap it up as quickly as possible.

Wednesday Addams = HBIC.

My heart practically stops at the 'Dory remembers' scene, it doesn't matter how many times I watch that movie. Completely amazing.
